Scholarship Details
- A total scholarship award of $25,000 is provided
- The scholarship is paid in two installments
- The first installment is paid after winners are notified in mid-July
- The second installment is paid the following February after the recipient submits a progress report and provides a short project update by video call
- Scholarship funds may support research and career development expenses, including stipends, travel, conference fees, training workshops, research materials, and supplies
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate institution in the United States at the time of application
- Applicants must have strong academic qualifications
- Applicants must have academic or career goals focused on making a significant positive difference in the long-term protection of wilderness in the United States
Application Process
- Prepare a two-page cover letter describing your motivation for applying, passion for wilderness conservation, qualifications, proposed project, and how the project fits the goals of the scholarship
- Prepare a 3-5 page, double-spaced proposal describing the proposed work and providing a timeline for completing a paper within 24 months; include a 300-500 word abstract at the beginning of the proposal; use 12-point font and 1-inch margins (the page limit includes images, tables, and charts but does not include references or citations)
- Prepare a current résumé or curriculum vitae
- Obtain two letters of recommendation describing your ability to meet the objectives of the scholarship and proposed work; one letter should come from your major professor, advisor, or committee chair and indicate support for your project
- Obtain scanned undergraduate and graduate transcripts, either official or unofficial
- Prepare a one-page budget explaining how the scholarship funds will be spent
- Save all application materials in PDF format and ensure that documents, particularly transcripts, are not password protected
- Submit the completed application to The Wilderness Society during the application period from mid-February to mid-April
