Scholarship Description

Through the Herbert Roback Scholarship, the National Academy of Public Administration awards one D.C. Metropolitan area graduate student in the public administration field with up to $7,500 towards their education. Universities must nominate students to receive this prestigious award; self-nominations will not be considered.

Scholarship Details

  • Universities can nominate up to 2 students per year
  • Nomination packages may be emailed or sent through physical mail to the National Academy of Public Administration
  • Recipients are formally recognized at the annual National Academy of Public Administration meeting

Eligibility Criteria

  • Current or admitted full-time graduate student
  • Attending a D.C. metropolitan area school, or one of the following:

    • Brandeis University
    • John Jay College at CUNY
    • Maxwell School at Syracuse University
    • New York University
    • SUNY - Albany, Binghamton, or Brockport
    • Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton
  • Public administration-related major, including:

    • Public administration
    • Public affairs
    • International affairs
    • Public policy
    • Political science

Application Process

  1. Ensure you meet all the scholarship eligibility criteria
  2. If nominated by your university, provide required documents to your institution, including:

    • Transcripts, undergraduate and graduate
    • Biographical resume or curriculum vitae
    • 500-word personal statement
    • Two academic letters of recommendation
    • Cover letter from institution (optional)
  3. Ensure your institution submits the nomination package by the deadline
  4. If selected as the recipient, attend the annual National Academy of Public Administration meeting in November

The Herbert Roback Scholarship is named to honor the late federal aide Herbert Roback, a graduate of New York University himself and critical policymaker for the U.S. government.
