The Lax Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 by the late entrepreneur and inventor Jonathan R. Lax for the express purpose of encouraging other gay men to pursue higher education, contribute to society through activism, and to be out about their sexual orientation.
Scholarship Details
- Awards scholarships of $5,000–$10,000 annually
- Supports gay men pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees
- Encourages recipients to contribute to society through activism and community involvement
- Promotes openness, authenticity, and leadership within the LGBTQ community
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must identify as gay men
- Must meet one of the following regional requirements:
- Graduated from a high school in the Philadelphia region (Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia counties) and currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. college, graduate, or professional school, or
- Graduated from a high school outside the Philadelphia region and currently enrolled in an accredited college, graduate, or professional school within the Philadelphia region
- Must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement
Application Process
- Complete the Jonathan R. Lax Scholarship application form available through the Bread & Roses Community Fund website
- Provide academic transcripts from your current or most recent institution
- Submit personal essays describing your educational goals, community service, and activism
- Include letters of recommendation supporting your leadership and academic potential
- Ensure all materials are submitted by the published application deadline
- Await notification following the selection committee’s review process
