The NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program is offered to encourage students to pursue careers as math and science teachers in secondary education (grades 7-12). Awards are made to students attending school at the undergraduate and/or graduate degree level in exchange for five years of full-time employment as math or science teachers in secondary education in New York State.
Scholarship Details
- Open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in approved teacher preparation programs
- Covers tuition up to the SUNY undergraduate rate
- Amount is the lesser of actual tuition or SUNY tuition rate
- Annual award, paid at the end of the academic year
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be enrolled full-time in a program leading to certification as a secondary education math or science teacher
- Must attend a CUNY, SUNY, or private college in New York State
- Must commit to teaching math or science in a New York State secondary school for a minimum of five years
- Must not be in default on any state or federal student loan
- Must comply with service conditions of any prior NYS awards received
- No income limits apply
Application Process
- Enroll in an approved full-time teacher preparation program at an eligible institution
- Complete the FAFSA and TAP application or the NYS DREAM Act application annually
- Submit the scholarship application through the official NYS HESC website
- Ensure compliance with eligibility and financial requirements throughout the academic year
- Maintain academic progress and fulfill service obligations post-graduation
Covers the cost of tuition, not to exceed tuition costs equal to tuition at a state-operated SUNY college. The value of the award (for both undergraduates and graduate students) is the undergraduate tuition rate of SUNY which is $3,535 per semester or the actual tuition charged, whichever is less.
