Scholarship Description

The North Dakota Student Financial Assistance Program, also known as the State Grant, provides financial assistance to eligible North Dakota residents who are first-time undergraduate students. Students must enroll at least quarter-time in an eligible program at a qualifying North Dakota institution.

Scholarship Details

  • Provides non-repayable, need-based financial assistance
  • Awards are up to $1,375 per semester or $917 per quarter, based on enrollment status
  • Eligibility is limited to eight semesters or twelve quarters of full-time equivalent undergraduate enrollment, or until the student earns a baccalaureate degree, whichever comes first

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be North Dakota residents
  • Applicants must be first-time undergraduate students
  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours in an eligible program at a qualifying institution
  • Applicants must have graduated from a North Dakota high school
  • Applicants may qualify if they graduated from a high school in a bordering state under North Dakota Century Code Chapter 15.1-29
  • Applicants may qualify if they graduated from a nonpublic high school in a bordering state while residing with a custodial parent in North Dakota
  • Applicants who completed a qualifying home education program must provide their final high school transcript showing courses taken to NDUS and their Statement of Intent to Homeschool as required by North Dakota law
  • Applicants who received a GED from the North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction must provide their final earned GED certificate to NDUS
  • Applicants who, because of a medically certifiable disability, need to attend an accredited institution outside North Dakota that offers special services or facilities unavailable in the state may qualify, provided the institution offers a program of instruction lasting at least two academic years

Application Process

  1. Confirm that you meet the requirements for the Grant
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to establish eligibility for need-based financial assistance
  3. If you completed a qualifying home education program, send your final high school transcript and required Statement of Intent to Homeschool to NDUS
  4. If you received a GED from the North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction, send your final earned GED certificate to NDUS
  5. If you need to attend an eligible institution outside North Dakota because of a medically certifiable disability, contact NDUS to inquire about eligibility
  6. Reapply each year by completing the FAFSA and continue meeting the program's eligibility requirements

The North Dakota State Grant can help eligible students reduce the cost of attending college without taking on additional debt. Completing the required steps early can help students take advantage of available state financial assistance.
