Scholarship Description

The Ohio Safety Officers College Memorial Fund offers undergraduate tuition assistance to the children, spouses, and qualified former spouses of peace officers, firefighters, certain safety officers, and U.S. armed services members killed in the line of duty. This program ensures access to education for those impacted by the loss of loved ones serving their communities and country.

Scholarship Details

  • Covers 100% instructional and student fee charges at public colleges and universities for associate’s or bachelor’s degree programs.
  • Provides $9,449 annually for tuition at private (non-profit and for-profit) post-secondary institutions for associate’s or bachelor’s degree programs.
  • Offers up to $8,000 annually for certificate programs at public and private institutions.
  • Recipients must be enrolled in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree or a certificate program.
  • Available to Ohio residents, regardless of their residency at the time of the service member’s death.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Child, spouse, or qualified former spouse of a peace officer, firefighter, or safety officer killed in the line of duty in the U.S.
  • Child or spouse of a U.S. armed services member killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, or in a combat zone designated by the President.
  • Must be an Ohio resident at the time of application.
  • Must be pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree or enrolled in a certificate program.

Application Process

  1. Gather required documentation based on eligibility:
    • For U.S. armed services members: Provide a copy of the marriage certificate and Report of Casualty to the participating institution, which will contact the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
    • For peace officers, firefighters, or safety officers: Obtain a letter from one of our staff at the Police and Fire Pension Board, or a letter from the police or fire chief confirming the parent or spouse’s line-of-duty death. Provide the letter to the participating institution.
  2. Submit all documentation to the institution where you are enrolled.
  3. The institution will coordinate with the Ohio Department of Higher Education to process the application and confirm benefits.
