Scholarship Description

The Oregon Chafee Education and Training Grant provides financial aid to current and former foster care youth pursuing postsecondary education or training. This grant can help reduce the cost of pursuing higher education or career training for eligible foster youth.

Scholarship Details

  • Provides need-based financial assistance for postsecondary education and training
  • Awards will not exceed $5,000 per academic year
  • Actual award amounts may vary based on cost of attendance, enrollment level, other financial aid and availability of funds
  • Grant funds are sent to the student's college or university business office approximately two weeks before the start of each term or semester

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must currently be in child welfare foster care
  • Must have been in child welfare foster care for at least 180 days after turning 13 and exited substitute care at age 14 or older
  • Must be a former foster youth who was adopted or entered into a guardianship on or after turning 13
  • Must be 25 or younger
  • The final Chafee Grant disbursement must be received during the term before the student turns 26

Application Process

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  2. Complete the online Chafee Education and Training Grant application
  3. If your foster care placement was outside Oregon, consider applying through the state where you were in foster care; if you apply through Oregon instead, additional documentation will be required
  4. Indicate all terms that you attended or plan to attend
  5. Sign and return the financial aid award letter when you receive it from your school, or accept the award online
  6. If you change schools or update your address, telephone number, or email after submitting the application, update your Profile in the OSAC Student Portal
