Scholarship Description

The RTDNF Pete Wilson Scholarship supports students pursuing careers in radio, television or digital journalism. Offered through the RTDNA Foundation, this scholarship is part of a long-standing program that has awarded more than $1 million to aspiring journalists since 1970. Recipients receive financial support for their education and are invited to attend the RTDNA Foundation First Amendment Awards with travel expenses covered.

Scholarship Details

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Applicants must be from or studying in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Scholarship recipients are invited to attend the RTDNA Foundation First Amendment Awards at no cost, with travel support provided
  • Applicants may apply for only one RTDNA Foundation scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be from or studying in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Must be pursuing a career in radio, television, or digital journalism
  • Undergraduate applicants must be at least incoming sophomores
  • Graduate students are eligible to apply
  • Must be studying or working in the United States
  • Previous recipients of the same scholarship are not eligible to receive it again

Application Process

  1. Complete the online scholarship application form
  2. Provide your contact information and details about your journalism experience
  3. Submit links to three to five broadcast or online journalism work samples hosted on platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo or SoundCloud
  4. Upload a cover letter describing your journalism experience, how you plan to use the scholarship funds, and your reasons for pursuing a journalism career
  5. Upload your current resume
  6. Request and submit a letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor or supervisor
  7. Review your application and submit all required materials before the deadline

The Pete Wilson Journalism Scholarship was established in 2007 to honor the late Pete Wilson, a San Francisco television and radio journalist. The scholarship is granted to an undergraduate or graduate journalism student from the San Francisco Bay Area or attending a college or university in the Bay Area who shares Wilson's commitment to ethical, responsible journalism. The Pete Wilson Scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate applicants.
