Scholarship Description

The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of South Carolina announces the Gilman Montgomery French (GMF) Scholarship. Any student in South Carolina or descendant of one of our members may apply.

Scholarship Details

  • Scholarship offered by the Society of Mayflower Descendants in South Carolina
  • Open to all South Carolina students and descendants of SMD SC members
  • Follows the annual National History Day theme and NHD Contest Rule Book
  • Award amounts up to $1,500 for college or continuing education
  • Submissions may include essays or NHD projects depending on division

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a middle school, high school, or college level student within the appropriate division
  • Applicant must reside in South Carolina or be a descendant of an SMD SC member
  • College division applicants must be age 18 to 24 and enrolled in a two year, four year, or career or graduate program
  • Projects or essays must relate to the current National History Day theme and follow NHD rules

Application Process

  1. Select a historical subject connected to the current National History Day theme
  2. Prepare an essay or National History Day project following all NHD Contest Rule Book requirements
  3. Include a title page, process paper or annotated bibliography as required for your division
  4. Complete a cover sheet with applicant contact information, division selection, and teacher or advisor information if applicable
  5. For group submissions, include agreement statements from all members
  6. Submit materials electronically or arrange for physical submission before May 1st

There are many resources at the NHD website to guide you on the theme and on submissions to their contest.* Our rules for submissions follow the NHD Contest Rule Book.† Any historical subject which relates to the theme is accepted.
