The Smith Foundation provides financial scholarships annually to deserving Alabama students. Applications open each Fall, typically in September or October, and close the first week in January. Applications are announced on the website and every high school in the state receives written and/or phone contact to alert counselors, English teachers, or other school staff. Scholarship Details
- Applications open October and close the first week of January.
- Scholarships range from $500 to $20,000.
- Smith Scholars receive additional support, including mentorship, internships, and the chance to qualify for study abroad and graduate scholarships.
- Full scholarships are renewable based on completion of the renewal application and compliance with program guidelines.
- 10 to 15 full scholarships are awarded annually, along with additional partial awards.
Eligibility Criteria
- High school senior.
- Graduating from an Alabama high school
- Minimum GPA of 2.5.
- Must demonstrate financial need (SAI exceeding $5,000) and complete the FAFSA.
- Must show leadership, community service, and volunteer work.
- Must have overcome personal and financial hardships.
Application Process
- Complete the application, including short-answer questions and essay responses on personal stories, future goals, and community involvement.
- Submit at least 3 letters of recommendation.
- Upload transcripts, proof of Pell Grant completion, and optional creative submissions.
- Submit the completed application by the first week of January.
The Smith Scholarship Program is a strict accountability program that requires superior academic and leadership participation. Each university will have a Team with Team Leaders to coordinate assistance and oversee required tutoring, counseling, and cultural event attendance.
