Scholarship Description

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is a unique education and workforce development opportunity for aspiring leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Scholarship Details

  • SMART Scholarships are available for students with college credit, while the Dellums SMART Scholarship is designed for students with no prior college credit.
  • Recipients may receive full tuition, annual stipends, health and book allowances, and internships at DoD facilities.
  • The program supports degrees in one of SMART’s 24 STEM disciplines, including Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and more.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be pursuing a degree in one of SMART’s 24 STEM disciplines.
  • Must be willing to pursue civilian employment with the DoD upon graduation.

Application Process

  2. Gather the necessary documents, including transcripts, proof of U.S. citizenship, and other supporting materials outlined in the application guidelines.
  3. Submit a complete online application through the SMART Scholarship portal during the application window.

SMART Scholarship applicants must be enrolled at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university by the program start date. Graduate students and incoming college freshmen who are not currently enrolled are still eligible to apply.
