Scholarship Description

The Whetstone Family Foundation Scholarship is now accepting applications from high school seniors who are either enrolling in or continuing their education at a college or university. This scholarship program is specifically designed to support students from our community who are pursuing academic degrees in the fields of medicine or the arts.

Scholarship Details

  • Open to high school seniors from one of Ohio's 32 Appalachian Counties or Geauga County.
  • Multiple scholarships awarded annually to students in medicine or the arts.
  • Scholarship amounts vary based on financial need and available funding.
  • Scholarship is renewable each year if eligibility criteria are met.

Eligibility Criteria

  • High school seniors who will be starting college or university in the fall.
  • Residents of one of Ohio's 32 Appalachian Counties or a resident of Geauga County.
  • Pursuing a degree in medicine or the arts at an accredited college or university.

Application Process

  1. Submit a completed application form by April 30th.
  2. Include personal essays responding to one of the designated prompts:
    • Arts Major: Explore the artistic heritage of Appalachia, discussing how traditional and contemporary art forms (e.g., folk music, storytelling, crafts) reflect the culture, history, and values of Appalachian communities and contribute to broader cultural trends.
    • Medicine Major: Examine health literacy in Appalachia and its impact on community health. Discuss challenges residents face in accessing health information and propose strategies to improve health education in the region.

Provide two letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or community leaders who can speak to your character and potential. Applicants must also submit a resume highlighting academic achievements, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities.
