The Fund II Foundation UNCF STEM Scholars Program will identify 500 African American high school students who are determined to pursue careers in STEM fields. These students will receive scholarships, internships, mentoring and other tools to help them reach their goals.
Scholarship Details
- Provides scholarship funding and academic mentorship
- Open to high school seniors entering college as first-time freshmen
- Designed to prepare students for careers in STEM-related fields

Eligibility Criteria
- Must be African American
- Must be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or national
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 unweighted scale
- Must demonstrate financial and unmet need as determined by the student’s college or university
- Must show evidence of readiness and commitment to major in a STEM field such as biological sciences, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, information sciences, or mathematics
- Must be enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university as a degree-seeking first-year student
Application Process
- Access the UNCF STEM Scholars Program application through the UNCF application portal
- Complete all sections of the application including demographic information and records of leadership and community service
- Submit one letter of recommendation from a high school STEM teacher or a STEM program mentor
- Write and upload all required essays addressing your academic interests, career goals, and motivation to pursue a STEM degree
- Apply for federal student aid at www.FAFSA.ed.gov to confirm citizenship and demonstrate financial need
This year’s cohort represents 29 states, with Georgia, Maryland and Texas having the highest number of scholars per state with 14, 10 and eight respectively. The scholars attend 71 different elite colleges and universities. Thirteen scholars will attend seven of the nation’s eight Ivy League institutions.
