Scholarship Description

The purpose of the Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) is to provide an incentive to financially needy students now attending elementary and secondary school in Virginia to raise their expectations and their academic performance and to consider higher education an achievable objective in their future.

Scholarship Details

  • Supports undergraduate students attending Virginia public two-year or four-year colleges or universities
  • Awards are proportional to financial need, covering tuition, required fees, and a book allowance for the neediest students
  • Renewable for up to three additional years

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate students must:
    • Be admitted to a Virginia public two- or four-year college or university
    • Be enrolled full-time in an approved degree, certificate, or diploma program
    • Maintain Virginia residency under the Code of Virginia or meet military dependent or Tuition Equity provisions
    • Graduate from a Virginia high school or complete a home-school program (GED graduates are not eligible)
    • Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
    • If home-schooled, achieve an SAT combined score of at least 980 or ACT Composite score of 19
    • Comply with federal Selective Service registration requirements
    • Demonstrate financial need as determined by the institution

Application Process

  1. Complete the FAFSA or VASA application by your institution’s published deadline
  2. Contact the financial aid office at your Virginia public college or university for specific application procedures
  3. Await award determination based on financial need and eligibility criteria

Renewal Requirements

  • Maintain continuous full-time enrollment
  • Maintain Virginia domiciliary residency
  • Demonstrate continued financial need
  • Achieve a minimum college GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Advance class levels annually (awards are restricted to one year per class level)

This program does not have a separate application; students must complete the FAFSA or VASA application to be considered. The application and awarding processes are administered by the financial aid office at each Virginia public college or university.
