The mission of the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association is to promote and educate the public on good lake and watershed management, encourage sustainable stormwater management practices and protect the welfare of lakes and other water resources within the Commonwealth.
Scholarship Details
- Multiple scholarships are typically awarded each year
- Award amounts generally range from $500 to $3,000
- Funds are sent directly to the recipient's college or university
- Scholarship funds may only be applied toward tuition or fees
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a Virginia resident at the time of application and at the time of the award
- Must be a student in good standing at an accredited college or university in Virginia
- Must have completed, or will complete by the award date, at least two semesters of undergraduate study
- Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student, full-time graduate student, or part-time graduate student
- Must be pursuing a curriculum related to water resources, such as biology, conservation, ecology, engineering, environmental science, geology, hydrology, limnology, stormwater management, water quality, wildlife studies, or another qualifying related field
Application Process
- Complete the scholarship application and submit it electronically through the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association website by the stated deadline
- Provide a description of your experiences related to water resources and watershed management, including both paid and volunteer work
- Include a list of clubs and organizations related to water resources in which you participate, along with any involvement in Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association events
- Write an explanation describing why you deserve the scholarship, including your academic background, work experience, educational plans, and career goals
- Upload a copy of your current college transcript, either official or unofficial
- Submit at least two letters of recommendation from non-family members, as applications without the required recommendation letters will not be considered
- Wait for the selection process, as applicants are typically notified of their status by July
- Previous scholarship recipients are eligible to apply again
The Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association Scholarship Committee members solicit and evaluate the scholarship applications. The applicants are ranked and a recommendation for the annual scholarship awards is provided to the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association Board of Directors. The scholarship committee members promote the scholarship to Virginia residents attending colleges and universities located in Virginia. The scholarship recipients are invited to the Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association Annual Water Conference.
