The Doris Buffett Independence Scholar Grant provides financial support to survivors of intimate partner abuse who are seeking education or training that will help them rebuild their lives. To be eligible to submit an application for the Doris Buffett Independence Scholar Grant all potential applicants must meet the criteria below.
Scholarship Details
- Awards range from $500 to $2,000 per semester or quarter
- Master’s degree awards average $1,000 per semester or quarter
- Award amounts are based on enrollment level rather than full-time status
- Supports academic, vocational, and technical programs at accredited U.S. institutions
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a survivor of intimate partner abuse residing in the United States or U.S. territories
- Must have been physically separated from the abuser for at least one year but no more than ten
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident
- Must have applied to or been accepted into an accredited U.S. program of study
- Must demonstrate critical financial need based on SAI and AGI
Application Process
- Apply to or secure acceptance into an accredited U.S. educational or training program
- Gather documentation demonstrating financial need, such as SAI and AGI information
- Prepare a statement outlining educational goals and how the program will support career advancement
- Complete the Independence Scholar Grant application and submit all required materials
- Await the award decision, which is based on financial need, enrollment level, and stated educational plans
Our awards range from $500-$2,000 per semester or quarter. For master’s degrees our awards average $1,000 per semester or quarter. Awards are based on enrollment. We do not require that students attend school full-time, but the number of credits a student is enrolled in will influence the scholarship amount awarded. Preference given to returning students, single parents with young children, first-degree seekers, and students in vocational or technical programs.
