Colleges May Bring Students to Campus for Online Instruction

Colleges May Bring Students to Campus for Online Instruction

With coronavirus cases on the rise in the United States, colleges are reevaluating their plans for the fall 2020 semester. Some schools have decided to bring a percentage of students back to campus – only for those students to engage in the same online learning that their off-campus peers would.

Harvard, Princeton and Yale are among the schools who have announced that some students – first-year students for Harvard, freshmen and sophomores for Yale – will be given housing on campus this fall, but that the majority of classes would be taught remotely. Harvard, for instance, plans to provide single dorm rooms to first-year students while delivering all course instruction online. Despite shifting to an online fall semester, only a few colleges have announced college tuition discounts. Princeton is among the few colleges planning to bring only some students back for the fall 2020 semester that will offer a 10% discount on college tuition.

An argument can be made for allowing some students back to campus despite shifting to remote learning. For one, it allows the college to more closely monitor the health of their students and better implement social distancing measures like mask-wearing and hand sanitizing. It may also benefit students who dealt with barriers to online learning while learning at home this past spring. Students on campus will have access to the college’s wi-fi network, not to mention a personal workspace in the form of a dorm room. But having to pay full tuition to take remote classes in an isolated dorm on an unusually quiet campus may not be what students want to do – or feel they deserve for the price .
