The Peter Kong-ming New Student Research Competition recognizes exceptional student research in the applied social and behavioral sciences. Sponsored annually by the Society for Applied Anthropology, this competition honors the legacy of Peter Kong-ming New, whose work advanced the use of social science to improve health care and human services. Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to earn cash awards, travel support, and recognition for their original field research.
Scholarship Details
- First Place receives $3,000, an engraved Steuben crystal trophy, a $350 travel stipend, and two nights of lodging at the SfAA Annual Meeting
- Second Place receives $1,500, a $350 travel stipend, and two nights of lodging at the SfAA Annual Meeting
- Third Place receives $750, a $350 travel stipend, and two nights of lodging at the SfAA Annual Meeting
- The first-place recipient must present their paper at the SfAA Annual Meeting and submit it to Human Organization for review and possible publication
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to undergraduate and graduate students who were enrolled at a college or university during the calendar year immediately preceding the award presentation
- Submissions must be single-authored and based on original, unpublished field research
- Research must apply the social sciences to issues related to health care or human services
- Manuscripts must be anonymous and cannot include identifying information such as author names or affiliations
- Papers must be double-spaced, use a minimum 12-point font, and not exceed 45 pages, including footnotes, tables, and appendices
- Unaltered undergraduate papers and graduate theses are not eligible
- Previous first- and second-place winners may not compete again
Application Process
- Prepare an original, unpublished manuscript based on your field research in the applied social sciences
- Format the manuscript using at least a 12-point font, double spacing, and a maximum length of 45 pages
- Remove all identifying information from the manuscript to ensure anonymous review
- Submit your completed manuscript according to the Society for Applied Anthropology's competition guidelines before the application deadline
- If selected as the first-place winner, present your paper at the SfAA Annual Meeting and submit it to Human Organization for review and possible publication
