I am Applying for this Scholarship because I don't want to have $200,000 in student loans when I graduate. I will never be able to buy a car, a house with this type of debt. when we apply to college we are required to complete a FAFSA form that request our parents tax return. financial aid is based on their income. they are not the ones going to college and getting the loan. I am the one responsible for my education. In the community i currently live in there is a great need for health and fitness education and instructors especially in a town that has minimum sunlight in the winter which can have an extreme effect on a person physically and mentally. This scholarship would allow me to gain the resources i need to change not just my life but the lives of countless others who would like to better themselves but just dont have the resources to do so.

I am the one responsible for my education. Why should I burden my aging parent with additional debt. I thought it would be appropriate to write an essay on their experience of growing up in a family where one parent was and Alcoholic. I wanted to write on their experience and how society viewed and reacted to their situation.

In 2017 I journeyed to the United States from Rwanda As Refugee with my mother and five siblings. I have five brothers, but I am my mother's only daughter. My father chose to remain in Rwanda with his other wife and six children. The lack of adequate medical care in Rwanda caused my mother to become physically disabled. This inspired me to want to become a medical professional.when my mother become physically disabled I stopped to go to school to take care my little brothers, and make sure that my mother is taking medicine as well.We arrived in North Carolina in the summer of 2017. I began high school in Charlotte in August that time I did not speak English. While I was in high school in North Carolina I took my mother to an outreach center. At the outreach center they helped her learn English, how to care for herself, and how to adjust to her disability. It was here I began to learn English also. While I was in high school I was a translator for other ESL students. I started an organization called International Ambassadors Club that helped new ESL students learn how education works in the United States. We discussed topics such as where their classes were, how to get better grades, how to make friends, how to complete homework on a computer, and how to become part of the American culture. Overall I helped them improve their communication skills as well. I was an intern at a hospice care in Charlotte Regional Hospital where I worked with many other healthcare professionals. I enjoyed working there because I could help ease the suffering of those patients that I came into contact with. Sometimes it was only a kind word, or a small act of kindness that would brighten someone's day. I plan to attend Sinclair Community College in the fall of 2019, and then transfer to Wright State University to earn a degree in Pharmacology as well as my Ohio state Pharmacology license. My goal is to become pharmacist, because there are so many opportunities that I can take advantage o

I am a single mother with hopes to become a teacher. I love the new ways children think and feel. I have been surrounded by adults all my life that have been heavy drinkers, and it greatly impacted me. Alcoholism is what lead me to the choice of becoming a High school teacher. It is my belief that children have a mentality of "monkey see, monkey do", and if they can see a positive role model in their life then they will want to be that for someone else. I'm hoping to be awarded this scholarship because as a single mom I have had to put my schooling on hold to take care of my son and work a 40+ hour a week job to support him. Therefore I don't have the time to focus on the future, just the present.

Although I didn’t have a specific name for it, ever since I was a young child, I knew what alcoholism was. Everyone in my family drank alcohol. We were a family of secrets, a secret society of “don’t think, don’t feel, and don’t tell.” The adults were very much in denial, and it was easy to see why; none of them had ever gotten in trouble with the law, lost a job, a relationship, gotten into an accident, been to jail, etc. Some people call these “yets,” which means it would eventually happen; however, I call it plain dumb luck. My mother, apparently, drank more than anyone ever really knew. Not only did she drink openly, at some point during her drinking career, she also began to hide her drinking. Her doctor had even told her she needed to stop, but an addict can’t just stop using on their own without help, so his words meant nothing to her. And that is why she died at the tender age of 46 from cirrhosis of the liver. After my mother’s death, I knew I had to do something to not only honor her, but to break the stigma of society’s view of addiction. I got my BS and worked with addicts/alcoholics to teach them that they are not bad people and that they can, in time, learn to feel good without getting high. They can learn to deal with their feelings without a need to reach for a drink or drug, and they can learn to love themselves again. My short term goal after I received my Master’s degree is to work with those who suffer from addictions both individually and in group settings. My long term goal is to start a drug court in my county. I feel strongly that if someone breaks the law they deserve jail time; however, when their crime involves illegal substances/alcohol, they need intensive treatment as well, or they are going to continue the same pattern until they end up in prison, killing themselves or someone else. There is hope.

I am applying for this scholarship because, I have just figured out that if I do not get more scholarships to help pay for my tuition I will not be able to attend my dream school next fall. I want to take this financial burden away from my parents so that they can pay for stuff that they need at home. This scholarship would allow me to accomplish so much more then I am able to at this point.

Coleen M  on 11/8/2018 10:53:56 AM

I would be grateful to be the recipient of this award because I would not be able to go University otherwise.

Deborah L  on 10/26/2018 10:57:06 AM

I am definitely going to apply for this scholarship. With the fall term, and being unemployed. This money would greatly allow me to be a little more comfortable knowing that any amount that I would win, is better than nothing, and would be a little less than I would have to pay back in student loans. These are trying times. Thanks so much for giving students like myself and others the option. D Lamb

I am currently in my second year of college at College Of DuPage, and I am in hopes to transfer over to a 4 year university. I wanted to go off to a 4 year university when I graduated from high school but due to financial reasons, that simply was not the option. I only have my mom and she is a single parent, raising me and my two younger sisters on her own. Receiving this scholarship well help me from my financial struggles with my education as well not have my moms struggle with helping to assist me with my education finances. I want to pursue a career in social work, I've always liked helping people, especially want to be a social worker for kids. Growing up without a father was hard because there was no real man role model in my life. And what is not a better way then being a male social worker helping kids, I want to be a male role model for kids out there that need one. I sure wished I did. Getting this scholarships well only draw me closer towards my dream in pursuing this career. Thank you, God bless. -Jacobo A

For once, I feel like a have a chance of winning a scholarship and feel faithful that I have earned and worked up to this. I am the first and last of my 7 siblings to go to a University and I am presently in a financial battle with tuition. I am working two jobs, practicing using coupons to save myself money and I am going out of the way to find resources to help me pay off college. I am determined to be the first to graduate in my family and prove to myself that I have the ability to do great even through struggle. This is my families dream and I hope to make their dream reality as well as mine. I love school and always have. That is what made me unique in my family and I aim to stay that way. "Knowledge is power and power is knowledge" primarily by Francis Bacon. - Thank You for offering another door towards my success and hope to learn from this experience. Sincerely and grateful, Ann Marie Parra

I don't know if these comments are actually read, but here goes: I've been in New York City for over 10 years, working with the public in a non-rewarding, thankless job which is quite dead-end. I am looking to advance myself and work in the Medical field, as I have always been called, now I am finally gaining the courage to make the changes in my life necessary to become an Adult Student. I want to not only make a change in my own life, but also be able to medically be there for my parents as my mother is a "recent" (car accident in 2007) quadriplegic, and my Father is almost 70 - I need to be properly prepared to care for them when they get to a certain age and I also need a career that will take me places. It is my hope that I can commit solely to school as I have worked since the age of 11 putting my entire life on hold for work instead of for advancement of self. Thank you for reading!

My life was going strong until I completed Highschool. I was strong in academics and had a bright future. Expectantly I was left on my own the day after graduating. I had no help in starting a life on my own or had relatives near by to support me. Through many trials, over the years, I have been able to get into college and start over. I am the first of my immediate family to graduate from college and I want to earn my bachelor's degree. I have never received a scholarship but to complete this journey I will need scholarships. My goal is to go into Sociology to help others through their life struggles.

Debt is no joke. Especially nowadays when the cost of living is at an all-time high and jobs not wanting to pay more than $10/hour for experience. This scholarship will allow me to obtain a higher degree with less debt and allow for financial stability so I can help my family who has been there for me from the jump. I want to help them any way I can and myself.

Noelia R  on 9/20/2018 11:21:47 PM

Hello, my name is Noelia Roman and I’m a 35 year old working single mother of four. I have 3 girls (ages 5,6,19) and 1 boy (13). I’m currently enrolled in Paralegal Studies at SUNY (Selden L.I.), I was also enrolled at Keiser University. Eventually since it was considered a private college I had to pay out of pocket and after many financial hardships I couldn’t afford it anymore. After years of working and saving I decided to take control of my life again and be a good role model for my kids. Fast forward to the present time ; I’m back determined to get my degree in law. I would like to pursue family law and help children in the fight for fairness when it comes to co- parenting. Since I know first hand what a divorce or separation can do to a child's foundation when it things get get ugly and not so amicable . Being that I’m the sole provider for my children and do everything by myself financially and physically it can be overwhelming at times. I don’t like to ask for handouts and pride myself in being a honest hard working individual. Lastly , I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity of receiving a scholarship from The Center for Alcohol Policy Essay contest, and am asking to be considered for this scholarship because this will help me progress. This will help pay for my tuition and books (side note: my 19 year old is enrolled in the same college as am I for film major which I’m also paying for as well) . I appreciate the opportunity and your time once again! Sincerely, Noelia M. Roman

Seeing the name of this scholarship, I already knew I would have to at least try. My father is a recovering alcoholic, and it affected the life of my sisters and I harshly when we were younger. It still hits home for me to see anything about alcohol, and my feelings on it are very personal and passionate based on all of the first hand accounts I've had with it. I'd like to earn my education with something that's meaningful to me, such as this, so I can spread the word and talk about how something simple like a bottle of beer can really twist your life around.

clarisse b  on 8/29/2018 4:49:17 PM

i just started college and i never knew how hard life can really get sometimes. as a freshman i'm taking student loans for this semester because of my out of state tuition. i cant work because i'm on restriction 2 weeks ago i got into a car accident so i can barely lift heavy stuff. only i can get any type of scholarship, at this moment it would be a miracle. since i was a child my goal was to graduate debt free but now i might end up debt full.

melissa h  on 8/27/2018 10:27:10 PM

This scholarship grabbed my attention because it has the word alcohol in it. My mom is very intelligent, but got hit from a drunk driver about 20 years ago and is now handicapped. It is hard for her to walk and find a job that would not put her in pain. I am applying for this scholarship for her so I can have help funding my education at the University of Colorado. I graduated high school early and I am currently a sophomore in college. Everything I do is for her and it would mean the world to me to receive this scholarship!!

Tyrone R  on 8/24/2018 5:35:37 PM

I want to finish my degree and not be a burden to my Mother. She did not raise me, but she has been there for me since my incarceration in 1998. I'm a free man now and she has allowed me to live with her. I am truly blessed. I want to show her that I have made the necessary adjustments for a better life, and that I am committed to the positive changes that I've made. This scholarship will allow me to obtain my degree without being a financial burden. Thank you for the opportunity. T. Rogers

Maribel R  on 8/17/2018 3:02:23 PM

Since I was very young, I've come to recognize the importance of education, it has always been my main priority. I am the first person in my family to graduate and attend college. My family has made many sacrifices in order for me to focus on my education along the way. I am currently in need of financial assistance — If I receive the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, I will use it wisely for my education only. Thank you in advance! Sincerely, Maribel R

Desirae M  on 8/8/2018 10:59:21 AM

I want to apply for this scholarship because I'm trying to graduate college without any debt to my name. I feel this scholarship will allow me to get towards my goal.

Maribel M  on 7/1/2018 12:09:50 AM

I want to apply for this scholarship because I want to improve my family's life conditions , I also want to be more prepared to be a good citizen and to continue helping others to achieve their dreams as you are helping me to achieve mine.

Just graduating from Tidewater Community College with an Associate Degree of Social Science, I wanted to become a Forensic Anthropologist. I am a recovering alcoholic I have over 20 years sobriety. When I saw the name of the Essay Scholarship I knew that I could write something interesting about my recovery as well as my interest in becoming a Forensic Anthropologist. I did well in Tidewater Community College my GPA is 2.6 almost 2.7. I want to go to Old Dominion University as a transfer student to study this program. Hopefully, I will be able to get some scholarship monies to help me with Books and school supplies. Thanking you in advance,

hi, thank you so much for giving us a chance to apply for this scholarship position. it's a good idea that one has to write something small for us to get your scholarship for we learn from it that "the harder you work for something, the greater you'll feel when you achieve it." GOD BLESS.
