  • Scholarship Description
  • Distinguished Young Women is the oldest and largest scholarship program for high school girls. Last year, more than $1 billion in cash tuition and college-granted scholarships were made available nationally. Scholarships are available in two ways: cash tuition scholarships (which can be used at any accredited institution of higher learning) and college-granted scholarships (over 100 colleges and universities offer scholarships to program participants – several scholarships are available just for taking part in a local or state program!) Must be female, high school juniors or seniors, U.S. citizens, and legal residents of the county and state of competition. Participants are evaluated on scholastic achievement, interview, talent, fitness, and public speaking. The number of awards and their amount vary from year to year. Before you apply, be aware that in order to qualify for, or win any of the scholarships offered by Distinguished Young Women, you must participate in a program. This includes attending a rehearsal(s) and being a part of an on-stage performance. For more information, or to apply, please visit the scholarship provider's website.

The college I applied to is amazing and has exactly the programs I am looking for- however it is very expensive and my parents cannot afford it- every dollar will help me.

Molly S  on 2/26/2020 2:42:08 PM

The college I have applied for is quite expensive. Its my dream school though. The nursing program there is magnificent. I applied for this scholarship because every penny helps.

Noelle B  on 2/11/2020 6:05:14 PM

I applied for this scholarship because the college at the top of my list, although it is in my state, is very expensive, and every dime helps. If I don't get enough scholarship money, I cannot attend the school I am strongly hoping for.

Theressa M  on 2/5/2020 2:33:20 PM

I applied for this scholarship because I am determined to go to a college that is fairly distant from me. I have been accepted, but money is tight because of its’ distance. This scholarship would help me get to my dream college and thrive as an individual.

This scholarship is something that will carry weight to earn. I believe that a distinguished young women is one who strives for self bettering and I feel as though I do. I want to be better than myself and role models so in turn I can push other women to be better than me. I'm only 17, 'I still have time' is an excuse. It's not I want to be great now, it's I will be great now.

Joellie A  on 12/30/2019 10:15:54 AM

I did apply for this scholarship. I figured what is it going to hurt.

Christine A  on 12/26/2019 8:01:45 PM

I applied for this scholarship because I have been avoiding trying to prepare for the future. But, I realized that you can only work for what you earn, and that will determine your own future. I have been working at Taco Bell for a year and a half and have been paying for my car, and school products. My dad passed away half a year ago and was a hard time. My mom does not make close to what she deserves to be paid, also my stepdad is unemployed. Leaving my mom to work even harder to support me and my 21-year-old sister that still lives in my parents home too. I am in tennis, band, and FFA also used to be in softball.

I want to become a special education teacher because I have had several experiences with special needs students there was this one student he was autistic he did not like being touched he would run up to me and give me a hug. I have applied to this scholarship because I believe that the gentle influence of a woman can make a change is so many lives. I've been involved in a mentoring program in my vocational school, leading tours around the school, helping with open houses, and giving presentations about my CAD and Animation class. I want to become a character designer and inspire younger children with creativity. Between continuing being involved in mentoring programs and working in animation and character design, I want to show young women that they have the potential to get where they want in life if they work for it.

I have applied for this scholarship for the reason that I want to go into medical studies to become a veterinarian. I don't only want to go out and help peoples pets I want to help every animal. The world is building up with trash and other pollution and its effecting nature and everything that lives in nature. Its not much to change the world but its a start for me so we can start with saving animals. Next the earth and people in it.

I have applied for the scholarship to assist my goals in changing the political world. I dream to be the first woman in my family to go into politics and law and it is my dream to make a footprint in such a male dominated line of work. I plan to use this scholarship money toward the honors college that I have been accepted into, which in turn is more expensive but creates a better education for me to succeed. I plan on practicing law in a big city while also working toward pro bono work and the innocence project.

I applied to this scholarship primarily due to the stigma around woman and how their viewed to others. As a young woman I aspire to change that and use my voice not just for me but also for the woman who deserve more voice or the woman who cant use their voice. I aspire to make a mark on this world somehow some way but its very hard to do that when you're low with finances this scholarship could help me fulfill my goals for woman empowerment around the world and my education as a young woman as a whole.

I believe that women have a voice in this nation and I would use this money to help pay for my college. I am a first gen and oldest child of three. I participated in DYW at the regional level in 2019, and it was absolutely one of the best experiences in my life. My chapter (York County, Pennsylvania) is known for giving out the most money of any regional chapter, which is a nice perk - but beyond that, I became friends with so many amazing girls in my area and I learned many skills that I will carry with me through my professional life. Overall, I won two categorical scholarships and was second runner-up overall, and I won $5500. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this program to anyone and everyone!!
